A Brief History

Wexford is named after County Wexford, Ireland. The original village grew up along the old Perry Highway, near today’s intersection with Wexford-Bayne Road.

In 1908, an interurban trolley line, the Pittsburgh, Harmony, Butler & New Castle Railway, built a wooden station at Wexford. The line connected the area to Pittsburgh and towns to the north until 1931. That year the station was moved to Wexford-Bayne Road and Old Perry Highway. It later served as a post office, antique store, craft shop, and deli. In 2015 it was moved to the Pennsylvania Trolley Museum, where it is on display today.

Over the 20th century, the farmland around the village filled in with suburban neighborhoods, and growth has continued. Pine Township’s population roughly doubled between 2000 and 2020, according to U.S. Census counts.
