A Brief History
The area was settled in the mid-1700s. The township was formed in 1845 from parts of St. Clair and Jefferson Townships and named Snowden Township, after former Pittsburgh mayor John M. Snowden. Voters renamed it South Park in 1966. The village of Library, once known as Loafer’s Hollow, takes its name from the area’s first library, founded in 1833.
An interurban rail line to the area opened in 1903, and the line to Library was converted to light rail in 1993. The county park was created in 1927, and many of its features were built during the Depression by the Civilian Conservation Corps. See the history of South Park.
