A Brief History
The land was once Valley Farms, a property of about 550 acres in Cranberry Township that coal executive Clyde E. Speer bought in the mid-1940s. In 1979, Speer’s heirs sold it to developer Thomas J. Reilly, who began a development called Canterbury Village. The area was known as Seven Fields for the fields that covered almost all of it. See Seven Fields history.
Reilly petitioned in 1981 for the area to separate from Cranberry Township, following a dispute with the township over permits, and Seven Fields became a borough in 1983. See how Seven Fields was formed. In 2002, two real estate companies bought the remaining undeveloped land. Speer’s barn and farmhouse still stand at Seven Fields Boulevard and Old Mars Crider Road.
