A Brief History
Pine Township was formed in 1796 and named for the many pine trees that once covered the area. For much of its history it was farmland, with small villages along the old roads north of Pittsburgh. Over the 20th century, suburban neighborhoods spread north from the city along Route 19 and around North Park.
Growth has continued in recent years. The township’s population rose by about 28 percent between 2010 and 2020, according to U.S. Census counts, and new neighborhoods are still being built.
