A Brief History
Settlement began in the early to mid-1700s. The name “Moon Township” dates to a 1773 land grant to settler John Meek. The township was created in 1788, and Crescent, Findlay, and part of Fayette Townships were later split off because the original township was too large for residents to reach civic functions. See Moon Township history.
In 1943, the federal government built the Mooncrest housing plan for workers at the nearby Dravo Corporation. Pittsburgh International Airport opened in Moon in 1951. When the airport’s landside terminal moved to Findlay Township in 1991, Moon shifted toward corporate development, new residential areas, and Robert Morris University.
