A Brief History

Monroeville is named for Joel Monroe, the area’s first postmaster. The land was incorporated as Patton Township in 1849. It became the Borough of Monroeville on January 25, 1951, and adopted a home rule charter on May 21, 1974. Read more on Monroeville’s history.

The Pennsylvania Turnpike and the Parkway East made Monroeville a crossroads, and it grew into a regional hub for shopping, offices, and hospitals. Monroeville Mall became widely known as a filming location for George A. Romero’s 1978 film Dawn of the Dead.
