A Brief History
Ligonier is named for John Ligonier, 1st Earl Ligonier, a British field marshal. Fort Ligonier was built in 1758 as a British outpost during the French and Indian War, on Loyalhanna Creek. On October 12, 1758, it withstood an attack, and for a time the area was Pennsylvania’s second-most populated place after Philadelphia.
The borough incorporated in 1834. The Ligonier Valley Rail Road, completed in 1877, connected Ligonier to Latrobe and spurred growth until it stopped running in 1952. The Diamond, once a corral, became a park with a bandstand in 1894.
