A Brief History
Hempfield is one of Westmoreland County’s original townships, incorporated in 1773. Early German settlers named it after Hempfield Township in Lancaster County, and the area was long known for farming and grain distilleries.
Hanna’s Town, inside today’s township, held the first English courts west of the Allegheny Mountains starting in 1773 and served as Westmoreland County’s first seat of government. In May 1775, residents drafted the Hanna’s Town Resolves protesting British actions. British and Seneca forces burned the town on July 13, 1782, and the county seat later moved to Greensburg. See Historic Hanna’s Town.
