A Brief History

Export’s story starts with coal. In October 1892, the Westmoreland Coal Company opened its No. 2 mine here. It was the first major mine on the Turtle Creek Branch of the Pennsylvania Railroad, shipping coal as far as Philadelphia and New York. The town was named for that coal “exported” from it, and a post office has operated here since 1892.

Export was incorporated as a borough on November 11, 1911. The remains of the No. 2 mine are still visible behind the district court building on Washington Avenue. A fourth mine entrance was rediscovered in 2019, and the borough has planned a walkway and signs to show visitors the site. The old Turtle Creek Branch rail line is now the Westmoreland Heritage Trail. Read more on Wikipedia’s Export entry.
