A Brief History

Edgewood grew in the late 1800s as a railroad suburb along the Pennsylvania Railroad’s main line east of Pittsburgh, and it was incorporated as a borough on December 1, 1888. Its train station, built in 1903, was designed by Philadelphia architect Frank Furness. The Pittsburgh History & Landmarks Foundation named it a landmark in 1998, and it is believed to be the last Furness building standing in Allegheny County. See the SAH Archipedia entry for an architectural description.

Just outside the residential streets, Union Switch & Signal ran its main factory for 106 years until it closed in 1986. The site was redeveloped as the Edgewood Towne Centre shopping center, which opened in 1990.

Notable Landmarks

  • Edgewood Railroad Station: A 1903 Frank Furness design along the East Busway, restored by the borough
  • Gardner-Bailey House: An 1864 home at 124 West Swissvale Avenue, listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1974
  • Edgewood Community House: Home to the C.C. Mellor Memorial Library
  • Memorial Park and Koenig Community Field: The borough’s park and ballfield, with a field house
