A Brief History
Green Tree takes its name from a large sycamore on Greentree Road where stagecoaches delivered mail, and the tree appears on the borough’s logo. The area was settled in 1793 and once belonged to a string of townships, from Peters Township in the 1780s to Union Township, before becoming a borough in 1885. George Washington traveled the route of Greentree Road, a Native American trail between Fort Pitt and Fort Henry. See the Green Tree Historical Society.
Green Tree stayed rural until the late 1800s. Rook Station on the Wabash Pittsburgh Terminal Railway opened in 1904 and spurred growth, and the borough’s police department began in 1908. The Historical Society was chartered in 1986 after the borough’s centennial.
