Lachlan McIntosh cut a road along an old trail, and it later became Brodhead Road, carrying a stage line from Pittsburgh to Beaver. See the township history.
Hopewell was incorporated in 1812. Independence Township split off in 1848, and Aliquippa (now West Aliquippa) was the first borough carved from Hopewell, in 1894. The Pittsburgh & Lake Erie Railroad began freight service in 1879. A 97.5-acre industrial park has operated in the township since 1987.
