A Brief History
The land was part of the Depreciation Lands, set aside by the state in 1783 to pay Revolutionary War soldiers. Franklin Township was created from Ohio Township in 1823 and named for Benjamin Franklin. It once included today’s Marshall Township and Bradford Woods. See the borough history.
Settlement began around 1800, and the area had an oil and gas industry from the 1800s into the early 1900s. Subdivisions, building codes, and public water and sewer came after World War II. In 1948 the township helped form the North Allegheny School District, and it became the Borough of Franklin Park in 1961. The borough celebrated its bicentennial in 2023.
