A Brief History

New Stanton grew from two villages, Old Stanton and Paintersville. Benjamin Snyder laid out a town along the old Somerset–Pittsburgh road in the early 1800s, and Paintersville took its name from Col. Israel Painter’s mill, built in 1858. After James F. and Catherine Stanton bought Paintersville, it was renamed New Stanton. A post office opened in 1841. See the borough history page.

On November 24, 1896, one of Pennsylvania’s first two Rural Free Delivery mail routes started from New Stanton, and a state historical marker stands at 135 West Pennsylvania Avenue. When the Pennsylvania Turnpike opened in 1940, New Stanton was one of its 11 original interchanges. The interchange was rebuilt in 1963 and 1964, the first Turnpike interchange to be fully replaced.

From 1978 to 1988, Volkswagen built cars at its Westmoreland Assembly plant in neighboring East Huntingdon Township. Sony later made televisions there, and the site is now the RIDC Westmoreland Innovation Center, a 350-acre campus.
