A Brief History
The Pennsylvania Railroad reached the area in 1852, giving local farmers a way to ship produce. In the 1880s, the discovery of natural gas nearby drew H. Sellers McKee, who opened a glass factory and founded the town in 1888. The town was named for his wife, Jeannette, and its main street was named Clay Avenue after a financial backer. According to Britannica, the town became a borough in 1889 and a city in 1938.
Jeannette’s many glass plants, including Chambers & McKee and Jeannette Glass, made it the first large manufacturing town in Westmoreland County and earned it the nickname “the Glass City.” Most of the glass plants later closed under foreign competition. The Elliott Company, a turbine and compressor maker dating to 1914, is now the city’s largest employer.
