A Brief History
Level Green grew as a residential area within Penn Township, which was incorporated on February 23, 1855, and named for Pennsylvania founder William Penn. The township was long a farming area, and coal mining later shaped its economy. Next door, Trafford grew around a Westinghouse foundry that opened in 1903, and the region’s industry helped drive residential growth in surrounding communities like Level Green.
A few miles east, Bushy Run Battlefield marks the site of an August 1763 battle during Pontiac’s War, when British troops heading to relieve Fort Pitt were ambushed. It is now a National Historic Landmark. Read more about Penn Township and Trafford.
