A Brief History
Gibsonia is named for the Gibson family, who settled the area. In 1839, Charles Gibson Jr. built the family homestead and the first steam-powered flour mill west of the Alleghenies, on Grubbs Road. A general store near the railroad crossing served as the first post office until it burned in 1908.
In 1907, the Pittsburgh and Butler Street Railway linked Gibsonia to Pittsburgh and Butler. The line closed in 1931, and buses on Route 8 took its place. Richland Township itself dates to 1788. Read more about Richland Township.
