A Brief History
The land that became Delmont, about 300 acres, was warranted to William Wilson in 1784. A crossroads village grew around a watering trough built in 1810, and 48 town lots were auctioned off two days before Christmas in 1814. The village was first known as New Salem, and its mailing address was Salem Crossroads.
Delmont was incorporated as a borough in 1833. In 1871, town postmaster Zachariah Zimmerman changed the post office name to Delmont. The crossroads role continues today: Routes 22 and 66 meet here, and in 2000 the old cloverleaf interchange was replaced with a single-point urban interchange. Read more on Wikipedia’s Delmont entry. The borough website also offers a video walking tour of East and West Pittsburgh Streets.
