A Brief History

In 1800, John Shaw Sr. bought 600 acres here and built sawmills and grist mills. The settlement around the Shaw mills was once called Shawtown, and Glenshaw’s name traces back to the Shaw family. The first post office opened in a store in the Shaws’ yard.

The Pittsburgh and Western narrow gauge railroad came through in 1877, and the post office reopened at the grist mill. On January 7, 1895, the new Glenshaw Glass Company made its first bottle. Glass manufacturing helped the community grow in the early 1900s.

Shaler Township itself was incorporated on March 20, 1847. It is named for Charles Shaler, a 19th-century judge, not for the shale rock in the area. Read more about Shaler Township and the Glenshaw story.

Housing & Real Estate

Housing Stock

Shaler Township is hilly and wooded, with three stream valleys: Pine Creek, Little Pine Creek, and Girtys Run. That means many streets follow the ridges and valleys rather than a straight grid.

  • Older homes: Homes from the community’s early growth years
  • Suburban subdivisions: Single-family homes on hillside streets built across the 20th century
  • Flood awareness: The county notes floodplains along the Allegheny River and two streams. Check the FEMA Flood Map Service Center before buying near a creek.

Types of Homes

  • Single-family homes (the majority)
  • Townhomes, condominiums, and apartments
